Today I want to discuss why GPC uses the color coding system that it does and also its unique month naming convention.

India has six seasons instead of 4 and also its own color system for the days of the week. Both differ from the GPC standard. Finally I must address these issues.
Let's begin with month names. We have entered the age of globalisation. The weather on this planet is very diverse. North America and Europe tend to have four seasons. The reason why this was so easy to adopt mentally is because it is natural for human beings to quarter numbers. Most measuring systems have this feature. Another problem is that we only have pseudo seasons in GPC. We sacrifice perfect alignment with the seasons in order to have perfect alignment with the weekly cycle. Maintaining weekly alignment is more important.
Let's dive into the weekly color system. Compare the GPC standard to the Indian color system based on the planets. I never realised it until making this Blog post but the Indian system looks and feels like India! The pattern also reminds me of Buddhist Temples that I have visited. Thailand also has a similar color system as India. The colors in the Indian planetary system are located mostly on the far right of the visible color spectrum - the extreme of which is red. Red is the most vibrant and energetic of all colors. Indians are described as being a very vibrant people. Apparently this aspect of the culture has a deep psychological and noticeable impact. I would describe it as being a little too vibrant for international use. The GPC standard has the following advantages:
- Adjacent weekdays contrast with each other
- Opposite weekdays contrast with each other(W & SN, TH & M, F & T)
- The colors are more mellow
- Easy to see on paper
- Adapted to human psychology
Instead of red and yellow there is purple and brown. This is what creates the mellow feeling. Maybe in the future I'll have a drop down menu so that it will be easy to switch to different national or religious systems. Another issue with red and yellow is that yellow is difficult to see on paper and red is already the international standard for correcting mistakes. In practice GPC works for professionals in any field that want to use GPC for taking notes with a different color of ink for each day. It is designed to be useful. Just like the qwerty keyboard, all aspects have to be taken into consideration which is why qwerty is still the most dominant and useful keyboard layout in existence.
Indian seasons are specific to India only and with it the ability to quarter the year is gone which is way too useful to sacrifice. GPC seasons all have exactly 91 days.
For the sake of simplicity and globalisation this is the way GPC does things.
The Color Purple
Purple is more important than red because the color was nearly impossible for many to create in the ancient world. Only the Phoenicians had the technology and manufacturing capability to create it which is why it isn't specifically mentioned in Hinduism and is not prominent in Bharat(India). It's more common in the Mediterranean in cultures with more frequent contact with the Phoenicians for that very reason. It is used in the Thailand system for Saturday I believe as a modern adaptation.
The oldest attested weekly cycle is found in the Torah. Since purple is the most difficult color to produce which is why it became the color for royalty in Europe and since Judaism has traditionally considered Tuesday to be lucky, we have adopted it for this day in GPC.
Note: For those that don't know already Phoenicians meaning 'purple people' are Hebrews. This is why ancient Jewish texts such as the Torah and Talmud are the only documents of the ancient world to describe the production of purple dye.
Human Psychology
The only colors we need to focus on for human psychology are the first day of the week, the last day of the week and the middle of the week. The middle of the week should be a vibrant color in GPC. Our most vibrant color is orange and it represents Wednesday - the fourth day of the week. Psychologically this has a profound impact. It's similar to how our bodies release cortisol at the 3rd, 6th and 12th hours we are awake to get us through the sixteen hours of the day. Athletes refer to these times as our first, second and third wind. The color orange is like that cortisol spike or biological cup of coffee, in this case psychological cup of coffee that gives us that extra boost.
Saturday is the most restful and meditative day. Black is all colors in pigment and the absence of color in light. It's all the days leading up to the seventh day. It's absence as it is a day of abstaining from work and emptying the mind from the cares of the world. Inspired by Judaism America has a two day weekend which is still slowly being adopted by other cultures. This weekend includes Sunday. For most people Sunday is the best day for recreation or outdoor activities. Sunday should be represented by a mellow and not a vibrant color. One of the most relaxing colors after blue is green. This is why nature is green and the sky is blue. The two colors that calm people the most are the two most frequent.
Human development is nothing but a quest for efficient management of energy. It's just time management. GPC carefully considers the effects colors have on our energy and mood. Everything in life is important.
Breakdown
If you are Hindu and use the traditional system say for deciding what to wear then GPC is not hard to remeber. My brain easily switches between the two and they compliment each other on some days. Sunday and Wednesday are opposite days so they are reverse of the Indian or Hindu system in GPC. Monday is cobalt blue instead of light blue. Tuesday is purple instead of red. Thursday is brown instead of yellow but honestly I think these two colors look so good together. Green and orange also look great together though blue and orange is my favorite combination. Finally pink and black or Friday and Saturday is the same.
